A personalised view of Poblenou

I've been living in Barcelona for 25 years and have now spent 11 of them in this quiet residential area next to the sea called Poblenou. A long forgotten area of the city as it was the backbone of the industrial revolution. It was once called the Manchester of the south as it was the home to major textile factories. As they declined so did the area. It wasn't until the late 80s- early 90s that the area began to transform. With the lifting of the railway which had acted as a barrier to the sea and the cleaning up of the River Besos the locals could now venture back to the beach. The area itself is squeezed between the two most recent developments in the City's reinvention plan, the Olympic village to the east and Diagonal Mar to the west. New developments are springing up all time and there has been considerable resistance to many of these developments by local residents. It is a very friendly and pleasant place to live. Up to now there has been little or no crime and the people are very trusting. The main thoroughfare is the Rambla that runs from the north of the neighbourhood to the sea. Great place to go for a stroll with the kids stopping of at El Tio Che ( corner Rambla/ Ramon Turro) for an almond type drink called horchata. You can while away some time at a pavement café such as La Tertulia ( Rambla/ Doctor Trueta) which serves good cheap meals throughout the day. For food by far the best restaurant is El Vell de Poble Nou ( corner Taulat/ Galbo ) reasonably priced family run restaurant. Kuletos ( Doctor Trueta 220) has both lunchtime and evening set menus. For tapas try APTC just along from Kuletos. Family run Bar Tomas ( next to Sorli Discau supermarket on Doctor Trueta) has an eclectic menu which changes daily. In summer there are small bars on the beach wheach where you can have a drink and watch the sun go down. The best place for food shopping is in the market (Maria Aguilo/Subira Plaza Unio) This doubles as a fresh market with an upstairs supermarket. For late night necessities Spar ( Doctor Trueta/ Rambla) is open until 10.00pm. Remember shop hours are normally 10.00-13.00 and 17.00-20.00 Monday to Saturday. For big time shopping you have the choice of Glorias ( Rambla/ Diagonal) or Diagonal Mar ( bus 41 from the beach going East). There is a bike hire shop ( Badajoz/Doctor Trueta). That's about it, I hope you enjoy yourself. |
